From the beginning……………..

So last year in December since we had decided we weren’t going to do have a Christmas exhibition that month we thought about having one in the new year now in 2018 in this month January to mid February. We thought it would benefit our work before our degree show and having the latest hand in within the exhibition space so what we would be exhibiting would be assessed. We originally viewed the old depot building in Colchester which we got told was free to use which was great that we had planned to use after we all visited it as a group and loved the use of space as it was so big, but it worried us how much it needed cleaning which would be very difficult for us to all do because it was so dirty. Things changed last week when one of our members of the group got told people were squatting there so we said no.

Another space we tried was Trinity church in the centre of Colchester town next to the library which we were able to visit last Thursday but being a church it came with a fair amount of restrictions. We got told that we weren’t allowed to hang suspend things on the walls which some of us would of wanted to do with our work as its large scale and sculptural so it would have meant we would have had to compromise ourselves.

I personally wouldn’t of minded this as what I had planned to exhibit one new sculpture I had planned to make in time and my blue life sized sculptural figure wouldn’t of needed to be hung up it would of been on the ground with projection but in the end we decided to let Trinity church go as it did come with theses restrictions and it was becoming stressful getting it all sorted. So we are now hoping to do one for march time maybe in the Minories art gallery as its a mainstream and professional art space which hopefully if we can get for free as it would give us more freedom with what we can exhibit and less restrictions. The Minories Gallery could provide leaflets about our exhibition rather than ourselves.

By having one in March time hopefully it gives us even more time less pressure to plan what we want to exhibit and from that our art will benefit greatly as it would had time taken on it. If their is a lesson to learn from this is that in Colchester its hard to find spaces which fit al our needs and sometimes you have to just comprise as the perfect venue doesn’t exist but onwards and upwards.

Photos the two venues we tried to get below.
